The research is aimed at improving the way offshore wind farms are considered within the current adequacy tools. A fast and accurate modelling of the offshore wind generation yields a better assessment of the power system ability to provide an adequate provision of electricity.

This research will provide a framework to minimize the expected operation and maintenance (O&M) cost of offshore wind turbine support structures by employing digital twins. The framework will define an optimal management strategy, quantifying the value of potential strategies through a pre-posterior decision analysis.

To date, we see a discrepancy between modal properties as calculated during the design stage, and the modal properties which are identified from built offshore wind turbines. With this research project we want to bridge the gap between characteristics obtained from existing integrated finite element models and measured characteristics from operational turbines, by developing a fleet-based model updating strategy.

Offshore marine operations in a windfarm can only be delivered when the marine environment condition is below the threshold of the vessel’s allowable limit. This research will improve the assessment of both the local wave field close to a monopile and the allowable limit of the vessel.

The research work aims at assessing the performance of curtailing methods for frequency regulation and load mitigation in wind farms. A probabilistic approach is considered by resorting to a stochastic characterization of the wind speed and direction, as well as different grid fault scenarios.

Recent wind turbines blades are becoming more slender and flexible, resulting in increased aero-elastic effects. The goal of this research project is to study those effects in unsteady wind conditions using computer simulations. The results of the simulations are then used to optimize the blade structure in order to extend their lifetime.

This research explores the benefits of hyperspectral and other optical imaging techniques for offshore wind turbine inspection. These camera technologies would be a safer and less expensive alternative to manual inspections.

How to deeply integrate offshore wind farms into the electricity market? Constraints like grid balance and frequency control will become more and more problematic as the number of GW of offshore wind energy is growing. To improve wind farm profits, it is necessary to have a better understanding of the weather transients impacts.
